What we learn twice fades much more slowly from memory than what we learn only once.

Hermann Ebbinghaus · 1885

The person pictured here is not Karl-Robert but his contemporary, the German memory researcher Hermann Ebbinghaus. He was the first to describe the famous forgetting curve — the speed at which newly learned information tends to fade from memory. We have not forgotten him.

Read more about Ebbinghaus and other researchers who studied how to learn more efficiently and remember for longer:

I think like a designer, but at heart I am a sailor and boat tinkerer. I know how many quiet hours there can be when sailing from one harbour to another. I also know how dull unfamiliar harbours can become when you spend a week or two waiting for better weather.u003cbru003eThat is why I first created these maritime knowledge cards for myself, and now for a wider community. They bring together practical skills, marine wildlife and useful knowledge that can help us handle life at sea and make every voyage more interesting.u003cbru003eAs an old captain once grumbled when I asked why I needed to know something: “There is no point in staying ignorant.”u003cbru003eLet us learn something new.
